  • The Alliance française is now the world’s largest cultural NGO. It was created in Paris on July 21, 1883, on the initiative of diplomat Paul Cambon and geographer Pierre Foncin, with the support of a committee formed by high-profile personalities such as Jules Verne, Ferdinand de Lesseps and Louis Pasteur. After the 1870 defeat to Prussia, it becomes crucial to reinforce France’s cultural vibrancy by creating ‘‘a national association to spread the French language in the colonies and abroad.’’ Since the very beginning, the multiple Alliances françaises founded around the globe are ‘‘free associations of free men,’’ directed and animated by nationals who are passionate about the French language and culture. The Alliance is French only in France. Elsewhere, it is Canadian, Chinese, Kenyan or Bulgarian.
